CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

Elven left the station, only stopping to answer Meredith’s question about where he was going. He told her he was going to get to the bottom of this thing since the feds clearly weren’t going to. When she asked him if they knew he was leaving, he shrugged.

“I’m not under arrest and it’s my county,” was all he said before stepping out and getting into his truck.

The retirement community wasn’t too far from the station, but in Dupray, that still meant a bit of a drive. It took him about forty minutes to get to the small community, but he made good time from the lack of traffic, as always.

The property was small, but wide enough to still be called a community. It was a handful of buildings put together with a few amenities in the center. It wasn’t anything special, but in Dupray, it was the nicest place for someone to retire.

Everyone who lived there had to be at least fifty-five years old, though there had been a handful of exceptions when someone’s grandkid had ended up needing a place to stay while their mother and father were absent, most likely from being in prison or rehab. But generally, if someone was able to live in Booker Groves, they had a better life than most in Dupray at any age.

At the front of the property was an office that one had to drive next to if they wanted to get inside the buildings housing the members of the community. It wasn’t fancy enough to have a gate and a guard, but just a single point in and out where every single nosy neighbor had the opportunity to spot whoever was trying to move, visit, make a sale, or even something more nefarious.

That was to say, Booker Groves didn’t see a lot of simple crimes like vandalism or burglaries.

Elven took one of the free spots right outside the front building where the door said OFFICE. Best to speak with the owner or manager before asking random questions to those who may not have been affected by BJ in the first place.

Inside was quiet. Elven noticed it held a community library. Books lined the wall to his left, with a few couches and chairs where he spotted two ladies reading, their eyes never lifting from their hardcovers. He noticed a sign on each wall that gently told people to keep their voices low. He wondered if anyone ever broke that rule and what the administration did to combat that.

Thankfully, he’d never been called out on a disorderly conduct call here.

The carpet under his feet cut sharply to a laminate floor where the office portion of the building started to his right. There was a desk that was empty and a door behind it that led to the owner’s office.

Elven had been there before on a number of occasions, but mostly when the whole BJ scam had gone down and he’d tricked so many of the members into his little subscription plan that had ended up costing them more money than they’d ever be able to spend.
